Guide
Data centres wait longer for grid power than almost any other building.
New data centre campuses often reach mechanical completion before their utility connection is ready. Construction power, commissioning and early operations all need an interim supply, often for months.
Demand is concentrated in Northern Virginia, Phoenix, Columbus, Dallas-Fort Worth and Abilene.
Data centre projects need temporary power in three distinct phases. During construction, the load is a site compound: offices, welfare, tools, lighting and security, usually a few tens of kilowatts that a generator would run at very low load for months.
During commissioning, systems are tested before the permanent supply can carry them. Load testing traditionally uses diesel generators and resistive load banks; storage can reduce how long those generators run.
In early operation, some campuses run on bridging power while the utility completes its connection. Battery storage alongside generation smooths the load, cuts generator runtime and emissions, and provides demand management once the grid connection arrives.
Questions answered
Battery storage supports construction, commissioning and demand management; it complements rather than replaces UPS.
Interim power that carries a site until its permanent grid connection is ready.
Because the building and its systems are often ready before the utility connection, which in busy markets can take months or years.
