AC-coupled vs DC-coupled battery storage

The difference is where the battery joins the system, and it matters most when solar is involved.

How each one connects

In an AC-coupled system the battery has its own inverter and connects on the AC side, alongside the solar inverter or the grid. Solar energy is converted to AC, then back to DC to charge the battery, then to AC again when it is used.

In a DC-coupled system the solar array and the battery share a DC bus and one inverter. Solar charges the battery directly as DC, so there is one fewer conversion.

Which one we specify

We choose per site. Where solar already exists, AC coupling is usually simpler. Where solar and storage are designed together, DC coupling saves energy. PulseTrek trailers take solar through the solar upgrade kit; Leberi projects are specified either way.

A practical rule of thumb

If you already have solar and want to add storage, start with AC coupling: it leaves the existing system alone. If you are building solar and storage together, compare both; DC coupling often wins where most battery charging comes from the array.

Backup behaviour matters too. Check how each design keeps solar running during a grid outage, because some grid-tied inverters shut down without a grid reference unless the system is designed for it.

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Is DC-coupled more efficient?

Usually, for solar charging, because energy skips an AC conversion on the way into the battery.

Can I add a battery to existing solar?

Yes. AC coupling is the usual way to retrofit storage to an existing solar system.

Does coupling affect backup during an outage?

It can. Confirm that the design keeps solar charging the battery when the grid is down.
